SK Telecom Offers Free SIM Card Replacements After Security Breach

SK Telecom (SKT) has announced a proactive step to address security concerns following a significant data breach that compromised customer USIM data. The company will offer free SIM card replacements to 23 million users. This decision was revealed by CEO Yoo Young-sang during a press briefing at the company’s headquarters in Seoul, where he expressed sincere apologies to customers and the public for the distress caused by the situation. He emphasized the company’s dedication to enhancing customer security.

To alleviate customer anxiety, SKT is implementing a range of measures, including a ‘SIM Protection Service’ and an upgraded Fraud Detection System (FDS) aimed at preventing unauthorized access or SIM duplication. The free SIM replacement service will be available to customers starting April 28th at retail stores nationwide and airport roaming centers. All subscribers active on the network as of midnight on April 18th will be eligible for one replacement, though certain devices may not qualify. Given the anticipated high demand, customers may experience delays in obtaining replacements.

SK Telecom advises that those facing long wait times can reserve a slot for a later date. Additionally, customers who paid for a new SIM card between April 19th and 27th will receive refunds for their expenses. This initiative also extends to users of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) that operate on SKT’s network, with each MVNO providing its own details regarding the process. SKT’s strategy involves a more robust security framework, featuring enhanced FDS and the ‘SIM Protection Service.’

Following the breach, the company has upgraded its security measures to block abnormal authentication attempts effectively. SKT is also promoting the ‘SIM Protection Service,’ which saw a remarkable increase of 2.06 million new subscribers in just a few days. Looking forward, the company plans to improve this service further to accommodate international roaming needs. Yoo reaffirmed SK Telecom’s commitment to customer trust and information security.
