Automakers Collaborate to Enhance Vehicle Connectivity Solutions and Technologies

Major automotive manufacturers are collaborating to tackle the complexities of system incompatibility in vehicle connectivity. To address these issues, a consortium called the OpenGMSL Association has recently been formed. This group includes several leading car manufacturers, parts suppliers, and chipmakers, and aims to create a standard that streamlines communication between various technologies in vehicles.

Modern cars have evolved into advanced machines packed with technology. Features such as parking assistance cameras and interactive screens require seamless data sharing, especially in critical situations like sudden braking.

However, the lack of a unified communication standard among manufacturers has led to inefficiencies and increased costs. The OpenGMSL Association proposes to utilize Analog Devices’ GMSL technology, which has already proven effective in millions of vehicles, to establish an open and universally applicable standard.

The association operates as a non-profit entity with an independent board, focused on ensuring that products claiming compatibility undergo stringent testing. This collaborative effort has already garnered support from industry figures like HH Lee of Hyundai Mobis and Sudipto Bose from GlobalFoundries, alongside specialized testing organizations like Keysight Technologies.

In practical terms, this initiative could significantly affect future vehicles. By adopting standardized components, manufacturers can reduce development costs, making advanced safety features more accessible.

It also paves the way for faster innovation, as engineers can focus on enhancing features rather than reworking data connections. Furthermore, increased standardization typically leads to more reliable systems, as widespread usage allows for comprehensive real-world testing.

As modern vehicles generate an unprecedented amount of data, establishing efficient information transfer is crucial to enhancing safety and functionality in the next generation of cars.
