Ericsson’s Cognitive Network Solutions has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to advance AI technologies for the development of self-healing mobile networks. The collaboration aims to enhance the efficiency and autonomy of telecom systems that underpin everyday communication, such as text messages and video calls, which require significant investment to maintain. Jean-Christophe Laneri, VP and Head of Cognitive Network Solutions at Ericsson, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating that it represents a crucial milestone in network optimization technology.
He noted that by leveraging AWS’s global infrastructure and AI capabilities, coupled with Ericsson’s extensive telecom expertise, communication service providers can more effectively adapt to evolving business environments, all while managing costs and improving operational efficiency. In typical scenarios where internet connectivity issues arise, the common solution is to reboot the router or turn to customer service for assistance. This partnership seeks to automate troubleshooting processes using agentic AI, enabling networks to identify issues and implement fixes proactively.
Instead of focusing solely on individual home connections, the goal is to apply this technology on a large scale, addressing the needs of millions of users. Fabio Cerone, General Manager of the EMEA Telco Business Unit at AWS, explained that this collaboration aims to streamline telecom operations, reduce costs, and enhance user experiences. The technology behind this initiative involves RAN automation applications, or “rApps,” which are designed to learn and manage various network elements.
These tools feature collaborative capabilities that allow for complex problem-solving within network environments. Although the technology may seem intricate, the advantages for consumers are clear. Self-healing networks can lead to fewer dropped calls, consistent data speeds, and improved coverage, particularly in crowded scenarios like sports events.
By anticipating user demands and reallocating resources efficiently, these intelligent networks can maintain service quality without constant human intervention. The growing complexity of managing modern networks necessitates a shift toward autonomous management systems.
