Huawei Unveils Beta of HarmonyOS 6 with AI Agents for Developers

The competition in mobile operating systems has recently shifted from traditional aspects like app stores and user interfaces to the realm of artificial intelligence. Huawei’s latest offering, HarmonyOS 6, leverages AI not just as an add-on but as a foundational element that enhances user interactions. The recent beta release for developers illustrates a significant transformation in operating systems becoming intelligent partners that can anticipate and adapt to user needs.

At the heart of HarmonyOS 6 is the AI agents framework, which streamlines the development of automated programs. This framework allows developers to integrate AI capabilities without the need to build or train complex foundation models. Richard Yu Chengdong, the chairman of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, has revealed that over 50 AI agents from prominent Chinese platforms will be available at the launch of HarmonyOS 6, although a specific release date has yet to be announced.

This integration signifies a broader trend where operating systems are evolving into platforms for AI applications rather than merely functioning as application launchers. Ecosystem metrics indicate that Huawei is making steady progress, boasting eight million registered developers and over 30,000 applications, along with lightweight programs known as “atomic services.” HarmonyOS 5 is also compatible with more than 40 device models, highlighting its continued hardware adoption. However, Yu acknowledged that HarmonyOS still trails Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android in global reach.

Yet, he emphasized that the most popular apps account for nearly all consumer engagement on Huawei devices, suggesting a focus on quality over quantity. Additionally, Huawei has introduced Pangu 5.5, an advanced AI model targeted toward enterprise applications across various sectors including finance, governance, and manufacturing. These developments reinforce Huawei’s strategy of building strong industry relationships while navigating geopolitical restrictions that limit consumer access.

The integration of Pangu AI models with HarmonyOS 6 creates a cohesive ecosystem that enhances both performance and optimization. Recent data indicates that Huawei has shipped over 103 million smartphones and 21 million tablets equipped with HarmonyOS, with significant adoption growth observed in 2024. The company’s multi-device strategy aims to deliver a cohesive software experience akin to Apple’s ecosystem.

This shift towards a broader software and services focus represents Huawei’s strategic evolution, particularly following the challenges posed by US Entity List restrictions.
