Optus Partners with Ericsson to Enhance 5G Network Sustainability and Intelligence

Optus is set to enhance its network capabilities by partnering with Ericsson to implement advanced 5G antenna technology. This collaboration aims to provide better coverage while ensuring a greener network footprint. Under the terms of the agreement, Ericsson will supply its specialized Antenna System solutions across Optus’ network.

Before finalizing the deal, Optus conducted extensive real-world tests of Ericsson’s equipment, which yielded impressive results. The tests demonstrated that the new antennas could deliver high performance while consuming less power compared to existing solutions. For consumers, this partnership promises improved connectivity with fewer dropouts and faster speeds.

This enhancement is particularly beneficial in areas where networks traditionally experience difficulties, such as inside buildings or in crowded urban locations. Ludvig Landgren, Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand, explained that their latest innovations will enable Optus to provide a superior customer experience while meeting sustainability targets. Kent Wu, VP of Network Strategy & Architecture at Optus, reinforced this sentiment by highlighting that the field trials confirmed significant performance improvements, leading to greater network efficiency and long-term energy savings. Industry analysts suggest that such upgrades are becoming crucial as more consumers adopt 5G devices, requiring robust infrastructure to support activities like streaming and gaming.

While the demand for fast mobile internet grows, the energy requirements to support it must be addressed.
