ABB Introduces Three New Robotics Families to Expand Portfolio in China

ABB is enhancing its robotics portfolio by introducing three new families of robots tailored to support China’s expanding advanced manufacturing sector. These robots are produced at ABB’s Shanghai Mega Factory and are designed to meet the automation demands across various high-growth industries, such as electronics and consumer goods.

Notably, China’s mid-market robotics sector has seen impressive growth, with a 24% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2021 to 2024, and projections indicating an 8% growth annually through 2028. Sami Atiya, President of ABB’s Robotics & Discrete Automation Business Area, remarked on China’s significance as the largest robotics market globally, highlighting the increasing demand for user-friendly automation solutions driven by growth in electronics and small to medium-sized enterprises.

The new robot families serve as a response to these demands, broadening ABB’s already extensive offerings and facilitating automation in emerging industries. The new offerings include the Lite+ family, which focuses on essential material handling and pick-and-place applications.

These compact robots aim to ease access to automation for smaller businesses. Next is the PoWa collaborative robot, known for its high-speed capabilities and user-friendly features, enabling rapid deployment and immediate operational efficiency.

Lastly, the redesigned IRB 1200 is optimized for tasks requiring precision and speed, promoting efficiency with its more compact design. All new robots are built on ABB’s OmniCore controller platform, integrating advanced technologies like AI and edge computing.

ABB has a strong legacy in robotics in China, manufacturing over 90% of its robots locally. As the nation embraces automation, ABB’s strategic expansions are poised to promote advanced manufacturing efforts across various sectors.
