Siemens and Microsoft Collaborate to Advance Open-Standard IoT Solutions for Smart Building Technologies

Siemens Smart Infrastructure is collaborating with Microsoft to enhance access to building data via the Internet of Things (IoT). This partnership involves integrating Siemens’ Building X platform with Microsoft’s Azure IoT Operations, streamlining the connection of building systems to the cloud and facilitating data sharing.

The primary goal is to assist large building owners—including universities, commercial properties, and data centers—in efficiently collecting and utilizing information from their facilities. By merging technologies from both companies, the integration enables the automatic onboarding of devices such as HVAC systems, valves, and sensors.

This process allows for the direct transmission of crucial data like temperature, air quality, and pressure to the cloud. Once the systems are connected, clients gain the capability to monitor energy usage, oversee air system functions, and develop internal tools for space and equipment management.

The cloud-based monitoring aspect of the system aids organizations in enhancing operations while adhering to sustainability objectives. Users benefit from flexibility, as they won’t be restricted to a single vendor.

The integration offers one-click onboarding and open data exchange options. The partnership rests on recognized industry standards, such as W3C’s Web of Things and OPC UA for device communication.

These standards guide the interaction and data sharing between hardware and software. Both Siemens and Microsoft actively support these frameworks, which promote open access, privacy, and interoperability in industrial technology.

The companies assert that this integration is among the first of its kind, exclusively utilizing open standards from different providers. Susanne Seitz, CEO of Siemens Smart Infrastructure Buildings, emphasized that improved data access will offer portfolio managers enhanced visibility into energy efficiency and consumption metrics.

Meanwhile, Erich Barnstedt from Microsoft reaffirmed the commitment to providing customers with greater choice and control over their IoT solutions. The integrated system is expected to launch in the second half of 2025.
