Reddit Files Lawsuit Against Anthropic for Alleged AI Data Scraping Violations

Reddit has accused Anthropic of developing its Claude AI models using content generated by Reddit users without permission or compensation. The user agreement of Reddit, which all users, including bots, accept, explicitly states that content cannot be extracted for commercial use without a formal agreement. Reddit asserts that Anthropic’s bots have been scraping significant amounts of data from the platform to train and enhance Claude.

This lawsuit also has significant implications for Anthropic’s reputation. The company has branded itself as an ethical player in the AI sector, but Reddit’s legal action characterizes these claims as “empty marketing gimmicks.” Notably, Reddit cites evidence suggesting that despite Anthropic’s claims in July 2024 about ceasing bot activity on its site, logs indicate that their bots continued to attempt access over a hundred thousand times in subsequent months. Furthermore, the controversy touches on user privacy concerns.

When users delete their posts or comments on Reddit, they expect them to be permanently removed. Reddit has formal licensing agreements with other major AI companies, ensuring that any deleted content is also removed from their training datasets. According to Reddit’s lawsuit, Anthropic lacks such an agreement and has declined to enter into one, meaning that if a user deletes content, it could remain embedded in Claude’s knowledge, thus disregarding user privacy.

In seeking legal remedies, Reddit is not solely focused on financial compensation for increased server costs or lost licensing revenues; the platform requests an injunction to immediately halt Anthropic’s use of Reddit data. Additionally, Reddit aims to prevent Anthropic from selling or licensing any products derived from that data, effectively asking for Claude’s removal from the market. This situation raises a crucial question: Does being “publicly available” on the internet mean content is free for companies to use for profit?

Reddit firmly argues against this notion, and the outcome of the lawsuit could redefine the landscape of AI development going forward.
